May 2011

May Sibshop was a blast! The weather was finally nice enough to head outside. Sibshoppers took full advantage of the nice day. Each Sibshopper wrote an "I am" poem. It was fun to see all the different responses to the fill in the blank layout.

Those who finished their poem early, drew self portraits on the back of their poem. Some of the pictures were just as creative as the poems on the other side.

Group beanbag juggling got really tricky when we all got together. Sibshoppers closed in tight to make a useless machine.

Feelings beanbag toss was a chance for everyone to share good and bad feelings they have about their sibling with disabilities.

We picnicked outside for because of the nice weather.

Everyone loved toppling towers. We played 2 rounds.

Teams that were waiting got really creative with the sidewalk chalk.

April 2011

April Sibshop was "Egg"celent!!! From decorating eggs, to a fun egg relay, Sibshoppers really got into the Easter theme.

March 2011

Our March Sibshop was full of fun! We made a handful of new friends in our first time Sibshop attendees. We hope you all keep coming out for more fun and friendship!

In honor of St. Patricks Day, we made some shamrock nametags. We filled in the empty space with a word that describes us and some of our favorites--movie, game, food and color. We are a diverse group, but do share lots of the same likes-especially for pizza!
A game of "Airport" kept us moving down an airstrip lined with all sorts of obstacles! Depending upon one another for information and support, our human airplanes were able to successfully navigate their way to a safe landing. Mackenzie decided to celebrate her birthday a little early with her Sibshop friends. Thanks for sharing your fun 'Kung Fu Panda" birthday cake with all of us! I bet you can guess what her favorite movie is. The activity you see here is called "Action Art." The kids work together to fill in the blanks with colors and patterns and then to put a mystery puzzle togther. They were magnificently quick at putting this one together to discover the word "Lucky". They then shared with one another ways that they are lucky having a sibling with special needs. Somehow we didn't end up with any photographs of our "Behavior Modification" Activity. Our Sibshoppers are super creative and had one another behaving like King Julian from "Madagascar" and Godzilla! What a fun game with some fun friends.

January 2011

Welcome Back to Sibshops, year 2011! We are excited about the upcoming year and started off with a bang by celebrating Chinese New Year.
The kids created Chinese Dragons for our trickle-in activity.

The brightly colored dragons were perfection!

We then showed off our crafy talents by taking our dragons on a "Dragon Parade" through the building where a large group of volunteers were working. The kids were a tad embarrassed, but smiled and strutted their stuff! :)

Clayton led us in a traditional Chinese children's game called "Knocking the Stick". Getting those sticks to line up just right in the boundaries was not as easy as it looked.

With a little help from Panda Express, we enjoyed a "traditional" (wink wink) Chinese Lunch of rice, noodles, veggies, chicken and a fortune cookie for dessert.
Some of the kids even gave chopsticks a try!

We paper crafted some of our very own fortune cookies for ourselves and our siblings. We tucked our hopes and dreams for the new year tightly inside.

Happy Chnese New Year!

November 2010

We played "Balloon Stomp" as one of our first activities. This was a lot of fun!

It got a little bit crazy but no one got hurt.

Some of us got out really quick. It was a lot of fun to watch everyone else try and stomp the others balloons.

We played "Telephone."

Each of us told the next person what we heard. There were a lot of goofy messages shared.

None of the messages ended the same as they started. We learned that when we gossip or share secrets about our friends or family sometimes it may get changed and not end the same as it started. This is why it is important to not talk bad about others.

We received a really fun surprise from a SibShopers group in North Carolina.

We learned that there are other kids just like us, that have siblings with disabilities as well. We responded to their letters and shared some of our experiences as well.

It was a lot of fun. We hope to hear from them again.

We read a couple of books about children with disabilities.

We played "eggspert" and shared all that we had learned.

We had a lot of fun this year in SibShop. We can't wait to see what fun next year will entail. A BIG Thanks to Jessica Nix, Tina Dyches, and all of our volunteers that helped out to make sure we had a good time each month. You're the BEST!
